In recognition of the “Military Child and National Poetry Month” in April, I am hosting a poetry contest for all children of military families across Minnesota. The theme of the contest will be “My Experience as a Military Child” and I hope to recognize not only the Minnesota men and women who serve, but also the extraordinary sacrifices of their families as well.

The “My Experience as a Military Child” poetry contest is for all children of Minnesota military families from Kindergarten to 12th grade. There will be three age categories: 1) Kindergarten to 6th grade; 2) 7th to 9th grades; and 3) 10th to 12th grades.

“My Experiences as a Military Child” Poetry Contest Rules:

  • Participants may only submit 1 entry per person to poetry@franken.senate.gov or by mail to:

    Office of Senator Al Franken

  • Entry must be submitted by April 16, 2012 and must include the name of the entrant, parent/guardian name, address, phone number, name of the entrant’s school, and clearly indicate which age category the child is entering.
  • Entries will be judged on 6 criteria: Relevance to theme, creativity, judge’s impression, fluency, structure, technical excellence.

Ten winners in each category will be selected to receive:

  • An invitation to a reception at my St. Paul office, with me, my wife, Franni and special guest judges: Minnesota Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Larry Shellito; Minnesota Poet Laureate Joyce Sutphen; Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard, Major General Rick Nash; Minnesota Commissioner of Education Brenda Cassellius, Minnesota author Kao Kalia Yang and Minnesota Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve.
  • My office will issue a press release and photo from the reception to each winner’s local newspaper (with parent/guardian authorization)
  • Grand Prize: The top poems in each age category will be framed and displayed in my office in Saint Paul and in Washington DC, and each winner will receive an autographed book by famed Minnesota author and host of “Prairie Home Companion,” Garrison Keillor.

I encourage you to invite any eligible military children to participate in this year’s “My Experience as a Military Child” Poetry contest!
