Starting Line: Where should unclaimed lottery winnings go?

Have you ever played a Minnesota State Lottery game?  If you have, you might have a few winning scratch tickets lying around the house just waiting to be cashed in.

According to lottery officials, scratch tickets essentially expire one year after the game officially ends. So, what happens if you miss the expiration deadline before collecting your winnings?

In Minnesota, unclaimed prize money goes into the state’s General Fund.

Rep. Tim O’Driscoll (R-Sartell) thinks there’s a better place. He sponsors HF887, a bill that would change where unclaimed jackpots end up.
